What Fresh Hell - Blame JadedJ

Ok, Ok, I know the drumming thing is worn thin but... I hate when that word follows a true statement... I was just remarking to some past comments that I had overlooked in my thrill of seeing Dylan live again and found this juewell (sic) of a thought. Or so I thought at the time, we will see about that. JadedJ gave the post a link to Krupa and Cozy Cole in a drum set. I think we all agree that Krupa is la crème de la crème...but, there it is again...put Cozy Cole up against Benny Goodman and this is what you get.
The photo are gratuitous. I just like my camera work.
Here is Benny's version, and a photo.
(the cartoon in the middle is the site i ripped off)

Now the Drummers get off the porch and begin to howl.
One Cool Cat. Cozy Cole with Topsy part 2
You be the Judge.

  1. There's a great drummer out there today that the jazzer's know about but few of us do, Hurlin Riley, Winton's drummer. I was enjoying a cocktail recently at the Omni hotel bar and reminded of one of those magical musical evenings I've been so fortunate to have in my life when Wynton Marsalis, his group and several other jazzers jammed late into the night following the Jax Jazz Festival. I couldn't believe my eyes or ears as I listened to Hurlin play three different rhythms at the same time.

But if you're going to keep going in this direction you had better dig out Joe Morello, Art Blakey and Steve Gadd why you're at it.

  2. Good one.

Mr. C, I believe I mentioned Joe Morello a few posts back, here at absurd, and a Brubeck concert I attended. Morello was a technical genius, and uber smooth to boot.

  4. What's funny is that when the kids hear swing they really like it a lot better than their corporate whore pop stars.

  5. This is what I get for not visiting for ages. I saw Dylan years ago in Spain. I would do anything to see him again.

  6. Mr. Charleston… I’ll look him up. Hurlin (?) Riley. I that some kind of nickname or was his mother pissed off at his dad? Mr. Morello was at the top of the list. Mr. Blakey is still on the list, I will add Steve Gadd.

    All compliments are taken gratefully.

Jadedj…It came from you. Yes, I was at that concert also. As was Landon. A very meaningful evening in Jacksonville, Florida.

Harlequin…Yes. These cats set the stage and laid down a challenge that is still being reached for by the young ones.

    The walking man…right on.

Susan… We never close, all are welcome, come back anytime. If you are in the Tampa Bay area and He is here and you can get to me, I’ll buy you a ticket. You don’t have to do a thing. (Well ok, you must, enjoy the show, and not say a single bad word about Bobby Z.) (or his voice, or the set, or the band, or his outfit, or the crowd, or the traffic, or the cameras, or (maybe you would rather buy your own ticket)) chuckle

  8. Susan…don’t listen to Jadedwhatsit. I’m not poopooing anything.
I am clever, as he states, but that has already been seen.
I was merely saying your company is welcome,
but not any negative comments about the evening.
    Jessuzzzz it Dylan!!!
    Then again.
You could be one of the Obvious Five Believers.

    Jadedwhatsit…you are Obviously,
not one of the five Believers,
nor one of the sweet pretty things.
Because you would be in bed now, of course.
